BALINESE HIDEOUT - the tides margate

An ode to one of my favourite islands, the Balinese hideout is the most understated of all of the rooms, providing a tranquil space with an artisanal aesthetic. A bamboo clad nook, decorated in a muted palette of brushed stone, dried palms and earthy timber. Crossing through the threshold of this room washes a true sense of calm over you.

The pièce de resistance comes in the form of the bamboo pole ceiling, created using second hand bamboo sourced in Margate. They were painstakingly applied with each pole cut to size and matched like a bamboo puzzle. Working with the natural bends and imperfections made this a sometimes challenging yet incredibly satisfying element to install.

Finishing touches come in the form of dried palms (some of which were redirected from a neighbours compost pile), the bamboo light shades suspended as decorations, and preowned carved wooden sculptures for a touch of authentic Balinese culture. The sourcing of the statement vintage rug set the tone for the contrast print furnishings, which are softened with plenty of plants and natural forms.

The extravagantly giant custom made mirror effectively expands the room and provides countless angles from which to take in the extent of the detail in this space.

From ancient bamboo furniture passed down by family, to one of a kind vintage finds and second hand fabric, the authenticity and mood of this room is down to careful curation and showcasing the tales behind each piece.
