MEXICAN HACIENDA - the tides margate

Inspired by my travels through Oaxaca city, which led me to seek refuge from the heat in many of the beautiful churches dotted through the pastel streets of this rainbow capital. The textured, courtyard garden walls intend to transport you to your very own hacienda; with a palette that pays tribute to artist Frida Kahlo, bathed in the kaleidoscope of sunlight pouring in through the stained glass windows.

Old coffee grounds that were stored in the freezer make up the distressed surface of the walls, which are dressed in rich, summer tones. The custom printed tile floor creates an impactful entrance, with the beaded curtain enticingly veiling the colourful wonders behind its threshold. This was carefully designed to complete the perfect combination of clashing prints to compliment the stained glass window effect.

The custom build double day bed was designed to make maximum use of the limited space in the room and is dressed in handmade furnishings using recycled fabrics from previous projects, alongside a handful of tapestry cushions and a vintage Turkish rug that were sourced on Etsy.

The Mexican shrine features authentic trinkets collected on travels, whilst the mosaic egg lamps were second hand gems. The mirrors, radiator cover and chest of drawers were all preloved and carefully sourced to fit the theme, before being reimagined with my paintbrush to suit the room’s palette.

The final touch was the vines of flowers, to accentuate the dream-like illusion of a hacienda courtyard garden.
